MoveOn: Removing Omar From Committee: Improper, Unwarranted, and Islamophobic
Washington, D.C. – Statement from MoveOn Executive Director Rahna Epting on the improper and Islamophobic removal of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar from her House Foreign Affairs Committee assignment as part of Kevin McCarthy’s corrupt bargain with MAGA:
“Speaker McCarthy and House Republicans’ removal of Congresswoman Omar from the Foreign Affairs Committee is improper, unwarranted, and Islamophobic. Republicans are obviously more interested in political revenge than in governing.
“It’s clear GOP leadership targeted Congresswoman Omar because of her identity and her background, and they ignored her record of service advancing a just foreign policy, human rights, and gender equity across the globe, which she burnished during her previous two-plus years of service on this committee.
“Today’s vote demonstrates how weak Speaker McCarthy is, as he has once again caved to the MAGA elements of his caucus.
“This isn’t leadership, it’s revenge. While Kevin McCarthy and House Republicans stay focused on launching political attacks and advancing their MAGA agenda, we know that Congresswoman Omar will continue to put people over politics and help her constituents in Minneapolis-St. Paul and throughout Minnesota.”
